The route

Part 1: Europe to the Caspian Sea.
Timeframe: July 2019 to March 2020.

On July 15th 2019 we left The Netherlands to drive our home all the way from Europe to South-East Asia. Unfortunately, Covid-19 made us turn back after 13 months. Next year, we will try again. In the meantime, we’ll tell you about not travelling and preparing for the next trip.

Exactly one year ago we adopted Sparta. We are still very happy that we took that adorable, skinny puppy with us. He has grown a lot and is an energetic teenager by now, who loves running around like crazy and playing with other dogs. Although he doesn’t seem to mind that we are living in a home without wheels at the moment, we are sure that he will also be very happy to hit the road in a few months again! Because of Corona, going out for a coffee isn’t possible. Spending two weeks in a real house made us long for Tiny again. We drove to Friesland to be outdoors and visit nice places. So far, we visited Lemmer on foot and we biked through Sneek. One of the things we miss the most while being at our temporary home, is watching a beautiful sunset in a new place almost every night. It’s been rainy and grey in the Netherlands, and we haven’t seen much of the sun in the past weeks. We visited many friends and of course our families

We visited many friends and of course our families the past ten days. The Corona rules don’t allow hugs, but fortunately, cuddling with kids is still possible! Thanks @expeditionfamilyhappiness

As many of you guessed and know by now, we are back in the Netherlands. Corona made it very hard for us to continue our travels. Borders remained closed, or would close again. Since we could only move back in the direction we came from, even traveling started to feel like waiting, and waiting for what... So, after weeks and weeks of discussing our options, we decided that the best thing to do was to drive all the way back. We will stay in the Netherlands for a couple of months and hopefully, when all of this settles down, we can pick up our journey again!

The Çanakkale area really surprised us. First, we visited the city itself: we loved the boulevard and the the small street in the center. Then we took the ferry to the peninsula and visited many of the military cemeteries and monuments. We are driving along the beautiful Turkish coast! Just like 8 months ago, we visited some ancient cities and we still love walking through the ruins. The one on the picture is very special; people have used many of the old structures in new buildings and streets, so that they are scattered across this modern town. Who needs a house when you have a home on wheels? We love being able to see the sunset in so many different places. It was a true adventure to get to Mount Nemrut: du

It was a true adventure to get to Mount Nemrut: due to road constructions, Tiny didn't make it up and we had to ask a hotel owner to bring us there. Fortunately, we could also stay at the parking lot of the hotel and we enjoyed a tasteful dinner. Mount Nemrut is known for the statues, of which the heads are placed meters under the bodies. Although we still don't know everything about their history, the statues were built for the gods. Because of earthquakes, these heads have fallen off and a lot of other statues were destroyed. Among locals, it's a very famous place to watch the sunset; beautiful!

We visited the lovely city of Mardin, in the South East of Turkey. The small streets, multicultural vibe and beautiful buildings surprised us. Although it was almost 40 degrees Celsius, we enjoyed this citytrip a lot. This week, we are doing our 12th Workaway. With an amazing view on Mount Ararat we are mainly weeding a huge vegetable garden. Besides that, we help feeding the many calves that were born on this farm recently. The milk (and yoghurt and cheese) their moms give us is truly delicious! Back in Turkey! Crossing the Sarpi border took us three hours, which wasn't bad at all, as it was raining anyway. We love to be back here; we've missed the Turkish tea, the hospitality, the good roads and the food. Besides, finding things in shops is so much easier here! Let's see what the Eastern part of the country has in store for us.

One year on the road! Although the last four month

One year on the road! Although the last four months haven't been what we had expected, we are happy with the way it worked out. We have met so many amazing people and seen so many great places! Yesterday and today we said goodbye to our fellow overlanders and new friends; if it wasn't for corona, we hadn't met. We are definitely going to miss them, but hopefully our paths will cross again. The last few weeks, we have been thinking about the future a lot. Corona makes continuing our travels very difficult, as many borders remain closed. Our only options are staying in Georgia or going back to Turkey. We chose to go to Turkey, where we still want to see the Eastern part of the country. However, before we can cross the border, we will have to go back to Tbilisi to pick up the lab results from Sparta’s rabies test. To be honest, we have no idea what we’ll do after Turkey: will we be able to go to Iran, or do we have to go back to Europe? And will we find a new radiator for Tiny in Turkey? We made it to Svaneti, the last region in Georgia that we wanted to visit. It was a bumpy ride, but we are enjoying the views of the Great Caucasus, the rivers and the meadows a lot. Next: hiking to a glacier!

Of course we wanted to visit Vardzia, the famous cave city that King Tamar established in the 12th century. This powerful woman, who was called King for a good reason, is of great importance in Georgia’s history. We loved walking through these old chambers, although a big part of the city was destroyed during a big earthquake in 1283. We found a beautiful spot at Tsalka lake to park Tiny for the night. Besides some stray dogs and some locals coming by, it was very nice and quiet! What a big difference with last night. We were at Lisi Lake in Tbilisi and it felt like we were on the parking of an amusement park! Cars and loud music the whole night! We really prefer more quiet spots in the nature like this one.
